Portfolio Work — Derek Britner

Vocera System Administration

Administrator of the Vocera voice communication system at Massachusetts General Hospital — the hands-free devices clinical staff use to reach each other across the hospital.

The system: When a nurse or physician taps a Vocera badge to call a colleague, my job was everything behind that moment — the user accounts, the devices, the wireless coverage, and the call quality — across the hospital and its off-site locations.

Administration

Users and devices

I added and removed users in the Vocera system, purchased new devices and supplies, and trained new hires on how the Vocera device works so they could communicate from their first shift.

Connectivity troubleshooting

I troubleshot connectivity issues throughout the hospital to ensure quality voice service — tracing dropped and poor-quality calls back to their cause, whether device, account, or coverage.

Network engineering partnership

Coverage problems live in the wireless network. I worked with the network engineering team to add and remove wireless access points and find ways to improve the quality of calls made through the devices.

Off-site rollouts

I assisted off-site locations with their planning and implementation of the Vocera system, extending the same communication standard beyond the main hospital.

Usage Reporting

I created SQL reports for regulatory data analysis on device usage data from different departments — giving leadership a factual picture of how the system was actually being used, department by department.

Vendor Line

I communicated with the Vocera sales representative and technical support for assistance with devices and troubleshooting — knowing when a problem was ours to fix and when it was the vendor's, and working both sides until the call quality was right.
